It’s that time of year again, when many people purchase gym memberships to follow their resolution to get back in shape. At OceanGrafix, we’d like to encourage you to stick with another resolution: updating your charts. Like people (and their bodies!), the landscape changes, and so do charts. That’s why NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is starting its survey season in Maine in order to acquire new data for updated nautical charts. This area in particular is a very busy commercial fishing area, so updating these charts is deemed a priority.
After the month-long survey is complete, expect to see changes in water depths, aids to navigation, and navigational hazards. Many of these details will be new and not match up to older charts. If you’re boating in a heavily trafficked area, it would be a good idea to find out when surveys are taking place near you.
Even if you live in an area without much traffic, it’s always a good idea to make sure that the charts in your boat are updated. That way, even if don’t follow up on your other New Year’s resolutions, you’re taking the right step towards ensuring a safe boating season.
