It is one thing to observe good boat safety practices, it is quite another to have the seamanship and bravery to make a rescue that ultimately saves an entire family. Four individuals who did just that were recently recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard for their part in saving a family that was stranded on a beach in Nakwasina Sound, Alaska.
Volunteer rescuers Don Kluting, Tyler Orbison, Gerald Gangle and Howard Merkel, all of Sitka, AK, received the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award. This prestigious award is the second-highest award that civilians can receive for acts of courage.
Bravo to these courageous men who fought treacherous weather conditions and banded together to bring this family safely home. Our guess is that they’d do it all over again tomorrow if they were needed.
